December Updates: School Contest Dates, NEA Resources, and School Champion & Alternate Forms

Hello Coordinators,

I hope your December is going well and you can see the finish line of winter break on the horizon.

SCHOOL CONTEST DATES
If you have not already done so, please send me your school contest date as soon as possible. These dates will be posted on the Arts Council website so feel free to check out your neighbor's contest date/time or send your judges to watch another school's event as part of their preparation.

CONTEST ORGANIZATION RESOURCES
As you prepare for your school contests, be sure to explore these resources from the NEA on setting up your school event, tips for finding judges, and more:
  • Organizing a Contest - PR tips, staffing suggestions, certificates of participation, contest evaluation sheet, and a sample tally sheet
  • Judge Preparation - 2017-18 Judge's Guide, a webinar for judges, and a video with advice for judges from previous POL judges
  • Download Graphics - POL, NEA, and Poetry Foundation logos in grayscale, color, and several file formats
CHAMPION & ALTERNATE INFORMATION FORMS
Lastly, as your school contests get underway - please complete this Student Information Form for your school champion and alternate. It's such a help to get these in as early as possible so we can begin putting poems together for the semi-finals. All forms need to be completed by February 9, 2018. Our first semi-final this year is February 15th!

Happy holidays, one and all!

(note: we ensure judges don't attend a school where they may then judge at that school's semi-final).
  2. If any of your colleagues who would like to receive these POL update emails please shoot me their email address.
POETRY EVENTS
November 28th - Nationally acclaimed poet Frank Bidart will be at the Capitol Center for the Arts. He will read his work and join Word of Mouth’s Virginia Prescott in conversation. Poetry Out Loud & Positive School Climate

October 26, 2016

"I feel like I can really make people FEEL the poem. Not from an academic or structural way but from the heart.”

“DO IT! It will be a valuable experience. In addition to gaining performance and memorization skills, you will have three poems close to your heart that you can draw upon at different points in your life. It's a wonderful introduction to poetry that I think everyone ought to try. It's not just for theater or English based students - math and tech students will enjoy it as well.”

“I was very new to this program, as a freshman, but my English teacher was very encouraging to myself and my fellow
classmates, so I thought I's give it a try. I was surprised and honored to be selected as the champion of my school competition, because I was up against many other students, almost all of whom were my seniors. Winning was such a huge deal to me because it was so unexpected. I felt that if I could have beat those odds, I could very well beat any others. I worked hard at memorizing my poems, and really trying to make them personal and meaningful. I didn't end up advancing from my semifinal competition, but the experience was definitely worthwhile. It was great to be able to meet other people my age who shared similar interests with me and I would recommend participating in this program just for the sheer exposure it brought me.”

- Responses to the Student Evaluation NH Poetry Out Loud, 2015- 2016

Don’t forget! Teacher orientations begin next week
We will be hosting 2 teacher orientations for you to choose from. Attendance is STRONGLY encouraged for all schools and programs, even if you have already participated in previous years. Tips on Using POL to Contribute to a Positive School Climate (PDF)
  • ·         Celebrate Diverse TalentsPoetry Out Loud offers your school another opportunity for an annual competitive and supportive showcase of skills in addition to athletics. Classroom and school-wide champions can share their recitations at school assemblies and events.
  • Involve as Many Classes as PossibleHaving multiple classrooms and grade levels participate and compete generates excitement among students. It also gives an opportunity for teachers to collaborate and share approaches to teaching.
  • Encourage and Support ELL Classes to ParticipatePoetry is an excellent tool for teaching in-depth contextual understanding of English vocabulary and practice of public speaking skills. When ELL students participate in POL it enriches the entire school culture by providing meaningful curricular-based integration and opportunity for the success of all students.
  •   Invite a Local Poet or Teaching ArtistThere are many teaching tools and resources available though the POL website but having a local poet share their passion with students can elevate students’ own excitement and create real world connections. Invite a poet to do a reading, lead an in-class exercise, or open with a reading at your school competition. Ask a theater educator in your school to lead exercises on public speaking.
  • Get Fired Up for Your School CompetitionCelebrate your students’ achievements, hard work, and courage by making your school competition as exciting as a final athletic event. Possibilities include: reserve the auditorium, ask theater educators to help with lighting, alert the local press, make a program with student bios, create opportunities for school finalists to recite within the community, invite the public, invite high-profile community members as judges, announce the competition on the daily school PA broadcast, put the competition on the outdoor school marquee, invite band members to perform before and after the event, and more. Be creative!

Teacher Orientations

October 12, 2016

"I was surprised that I was able to select poems that are so out of my usual spoken word preference. The Poetry Out Loud website has hundreds of poems that I have never seen before, and the fact that I found 3 and was able to make it so far with them is amazing to me. I guess I learned that stepping outside of the box is okay!"- Annabelle Emuze, 2015 IL POL Champion

2016- 2017 Poetry Out Loud- Welcome!

"Even people who don't particularly enjoy most forms of poetry can still find a poem that they enjoy AND be very good at reciting if they set their minds to it. What makes poetry so appealing is its ability to describe all sorts of different aspects of the human experience in a new and unique light. There is a poem out there for everyone. Even my dad...maybe."- Danielle Corbett, 2016 NH Poetry Out Loud Champion

POL is Picking Up!

It's nearly mid-December and that means holiday break is right around the corner. We have a few updates on contest info and logistics as well as a few new resources.

Logistics and Important POL Info

The Student Poetry Clinic is happening Jan. 9th and registration is open! Please RSVP by EventBrite and then click "Contact Organizer" to provide an estimate for the number of students you plan to send.

Once you have held your school/group contest you should submit your Student Information Form through SurveyMonkey. You will need to submit the form twice - once for your champion and once for the alternate. It will probably be easiest to sit down with your student and fill this out together as we do require personal information such as parent/guardian name, phone, etc. If you'd rather type this information and send to me by email, you can download this Word version instead.

There have been a few last minute changes to semi-final groups as well as the addition of one new school, bringing us to 42 total! Here is a copy of the final list for you to download or reference the image below.

Resources for YOU

Create some buzz around POL! A Word version of the press release template shared by the NEA is available on the Arts Council's website - this is a great tool to promote your school competition and results.

The Arts Council has also created these jazzy promotional flyers for each semi-final event - you can find them here: SNHU, NHIA, Jean's, NEC! These would be great to hand out at your school competition and could encourage folks to attend the semi's! (Thank you, Emily!)

Here is a cool article on the "art of short story writing" and some creative ways to bring together arts and writing prompts. (H/T to Catherine for this one!)

If you or a teacher at your school would like to bring a poet into the classroom please contact Gordon Lang from Kingswood Regional High School - glang@govwentworth.k12.nh.us. Gordon is the Treasurer of the Poetry Society of NH and can help arrange this. (Thank you, Gordon!)

Don't forget - you can post your own questions, suggestions, resources, etc. on the Teacher's Forum page - it takes everyone to participate to make this work and be of any value so thanks in advance!

Meet two "genius" poets!

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation recently announced their 2015 class of grantees. These so-called "genius grants" are unique in many ways, notably that there is no application process and the prize money ($625,000 over five years) is given with no strings attached to help support the grantee and encourage them to explore their area of interest without financial risks. This year, two poets - 72-year old Ellen Bryant Voigt of Vermont, and 36-year old Ben Lerner of New York - were selected as grantees. Voigt's recent work includes Headwaters (2013), Messenger: New and Selected Poems 1976-2006, and Shadow of Heaven (2002). Lerner's work includes Mean Free Path (2010); Angle of Yaw (2006), which was a finalist for the National Book Award; and Mean Free Path (2010). His sonnet sequence, The Lichtenberg Figures (2004), won the Hayden Carruth Award, was chosen by Library Journal as one of the year’s 12 best poetry book.

Students' conventional wisdom may suggest poetry is old, inaccessible, or boring but introducing them to these two "genius" poets (and their fellow class of grantees, perhaps) may just get a new conversation started!

Welcome to the 2015-2016 Program!

Hello Teachers and POL Coordinators!

We are off to a great start this year with 30 schools already registered to participate in the New Hampshire POL program! We have 4 new schools signed up so please remember this blog is one way to connect with one another, share resources, ask for advice, and support the overall success of this program! Leave comments, ask questions, and share your insights!

Registration ends November 2nd so if you know other schools who are hoping to join, please encourage them to sign up soon before we hit our 40-school maximum!

This year we have a big change to how students will be scored. The category, "level of complexity" has been eliminated and elements such as length of poem and language should now be considered as part of the "overall performance" of the recitation. The POL Judge's Guide provides more information on this and the NEA will be conducting a Judge Training webinar on Sept. 30th fro 3-4pm EST for those who can attend. You must register in advance!

The beginning of the school year is undoubtedly busy and so we wanted to kick this year off with some suggestions on how students can engage in poetry on their own, out in the community. This is a great way to encourage students to explore poems and poetry before you begin your POL lessons and classroom and school competitions.

  • Encourage students to engage with poetry in their local or virtual community by:
These are all great ways for students to connect with poets and poems all year long! Do you have additional ideas? Please comment and share!

Teacher Orientation Resources

Once more - THANK YOU to everyone who was able to participate in a Teacher Orientation in person or by phone. We appreciate you making time for us and hope you found the session helpful!

As promised, I am sharing the resources we gathered from our Advisory Committee members and hope you will find them useful as you roll out Poetry Out Loud this year. We know many of you are also very experienced POL Coordinators so if you have resources of your own you'd like me to share with the group please send them over by email and I will update the list below.

Thanks and best, and wishing you all good luck with this year's program!

Special Message from Cynthia Robinson

NH Poetry Out Loud's previous coordinator penned this greeting to share...

"Hello POL teachers! Miss you all, and hope you're well! As I was talking with Alexandra today about semifinals and finals processes, I was reflecting on how very hard it is to predict the judging outcome. Some of you will remember that I did some digging into the data to discover how the points shake out. I had been under the impression that it was the Dramatic appropriateness score that was the X factor, but found it really was a combination of ALL of the criteria. Accuracy certainly counts big, but there really was no one criteria or judging point that consistently makes the difference between the top scores and the low scores. To me, this is a good thing, even though it makes the preparation hard. What it means is that your students DO need to prepare the whole package! To feel the poem, become the poem, know it cold, and express it clearly and confidently! And then....each presentation is received by a group of human judges, whose responses can not be completely predicted! At some point in the process students must let go of their own experience of the poem, and allow their audience to have their own experience of the presentation. The joy of POL is that it's all good! They are all already champions for taking that first step to share their poem with even just one person. Very best to you all. I hope to make it to a semifinal or the finals this year- always such a joy to feel the students' excitement for their poems! Cynthia
